Kawaii Alert! – it’s Kyary Pamyu Pamyu

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu

If you were thinking of popping down to the 100% KPP World Tour 2013 at the O2 Academy in Islington on Wednesday, think again. All tickets sold out within seconds of going on sale. Plus the venue is being really tough about queuing – I quote: ‘Anyone queuing in the N1 Centre or the local area more than a few hours before the show will be moved on and possibly denied entry to the concert.’ So don’t even think about it.

There’ll be plenty of fan action at the venue, I’m sure. And some pretty interesting outfits too. Why? It’s Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s UK debut, that’s why.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is a Japanese singer and fashion icon. She started out as fashion blogger, moved into selling her own-design false eyelashes and then became a model for fashion magazines in Harajuku in Tokyo, birthplace of Lolita fashion – and if you don’t know what that is, check back to my post on Lolita style at the V&A.

She released her debut mini-album, Moshi Moshi Harajuku, in 2011. It’s lead track, Ponponpon, has had over 40,000,000 hits on Youtube. Here it is:

Her official twitter account (@pamyurin) has over a million followers. She’s published a book, Oh My God!! Harajuku Girl (only in Japanese at the moment but watch this space). Next month a Kyary Pamyu Pamyu ‘museum’ opens in Roppongi in Tokyo to display her costumes. And let’s not forget the Kyary-chan goods – T-shirts, keychains etc which you can get from her official website.

She’s done all this in the last two years, and she’s still only twenty – in fact she’s only just twenty, as her birthday was last week. She says she’s influenced by Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Gwen Stefani, and Tim Burton. It looks as though she’s starting to move on from the simple sweet-as-candy Lolita persona she started out with into more of a gothic Lolita approach.

Here’s the video for her latest release, Fashion Monster, a collaboration with Japanese fashion brand g.u. (sister company to Uniqlo).

What can ticket-holders expect from her show? Lots of dancing and a carnival atmosphere with a theme park feel, so she says. Sounds like fun.

Plus she seems like a nice girl – take a look at this MTV video interview and you’ll see what I mean. She’s says she’s really looking forward to coming to London – I think London is looking forward to seeing her too.
