Hyper Japan is is the biggest show of Japanese goods and culture in the UK, and this year we’ve got an extra dose of it in the Hyper Japan Christmas Market at Kensington Olympia. (Not Earl’s Court like the main show – boy, am I glad I checked the location before I set out.) It’s got everything you expect from Hyper Japan – games, cosplay, sake, martial arts, J-pops and a whole lot more, including an incredible range of ideas for presents for the Japanophile in your life. Want to know what I picked? Read on.
Beginning at the edible end of the spectrum, these mega-kawaii macarons from Supercute Macarons take some beating, though I think I found them some tough competition on the green tea chocolate stall.
These traditional wooden kokeshi dolls caught my eye, along with a whole raft of maneki neko lucky beckoning cats in white and gold.
If you’re a fan of Hatsune Miku, the green-pigtailed virtual pop idol (or ‘humanoid persona voiced by a singing synthesiser application’ as Wikipedia puts it), you’re in luck. Not only is she appearing at Hyper Japan in 3D but you can also buy this model of her.
Moving on to fashion, I found these beautiful hats and headdresses on the Shinku Rose stall, next to some quirky sloganT-shirts at Genki Gear.
The T-shirts would pair up well with a tail from Telltails (motto: Get your Waggle on). Choose anything from pink tiger to dinosaur.
Or how about a pair of yuzen washi disk earrings?
Olympia has a wrought-iron balcony running round all four sides which gave an interesting new perspective on some of the stalls.
And, of course, the cosplayers were out in force. I was particularly impressed with this pair.
Hyper Japan opened on Friday and closes at 6 pm today, so you’ve still got time to pop down and experience the atmosphere, do a bit of shopping and catch some of the shows, including Siro-A and the COSParade and World Cosplay Summit UK Preliminary.
Happy (early) Japanese Christmas!
