Merry Christmas!

Merry ChristmasI wish you all a very merry Christmas and hope you’re looking forward to your turkey and Christmas pudding and all the other Christmas traditions your family follows. As it’s Christmas, I thought I’d share with you a couple of Japanese Christmas traditions that may surprise you.

Tradition number one: Kentucky Fried Chicken

Kentucky Fried ChickenYes, that’s right, the Colonel has persuaded an entire nation that Kentucky Fried Chicken is the thing to eat on Christmas Day. The headline in the picture says, ‘For Christmas, of course it’s Kentucky’. Millions of Japanese people agree.

Tradition number two: Christmas cake

Strawberry ShortcakeNo, not fruit cake with icing and marzipan; strawberry shortcake with lots of cream on top. My picture shows one made by Patisserie Déffert in Yokohama. Housewives remind their husbands to pick them up on their way home from work – Christmas Day is a normal working day in Japan.

And that’s a Japanese Christmas! Now, back to the turkey sandwiches and mince pies.

  1. Merry Christmas! I remember the first Christmas I spent away from home was in Japan. I liked the Christmas cake. Back then they had that saying that a single woman who was 26 years old was like Christmas Cake (not wanted after the 25th). How times have changed with more women choosing to be single nowadays .
